Public companies are required to report their earnings four times a year once each quarter. Wall Street watches with rabid attention at these times, which are referred to as earnings seasons. The reason behind this is that analysts base their future value of a company on their earnings projection.
If a company's results surprise are better than expectedthe price jumps up. If a company's results disappoint are worse than expectedthen the price will fall. Of course, it's not just earnings that can change the sentiment towards a stock which, in turn, changes its source. It would be a rather simple world if this were the case! During the dot-com bubble, for example, dozens of Internet companies rose to have market capitalizations in the billions of dollars without ever making even the smallest profit.
As we all know, these valuations did not hold, and most all Internet companies saw their values shrink to a fraction of what makes your stock price go up and down highs. For most actively traded stocks, there is another bid slightly below the current one. For each offer, there is another offer at a slightly higher price. This is because different people only want to buy or sell at specific prices. All of these bids and offers of various sizes and prices are part of the market's order book. At any given time, a trader can choose to buy at the ask price or sell to the bid price.
This will create an instant transaction. The trader may also decide to put out a bid or offer at any price they desire, but there is no guarantee another trader will transact with that order. That is how prices move. The same thing happens on the bid. When a sell order comes into the market that is bigger than the number of shares available at the current bid, then the bid price will drop because the selling absorbs all those shares at the current bid. When a buy order comes into the market that is bigger than the number of shares available at the current offer, then the offer price will move up because the buying absorbs all of those shares at the current offer.
So if the value of an option increases sufficiently, it often makes sense to sell it for a quick profit. If you have followed the lessons step by step and are confused, then I highly recommend you go back through Module 1 until you have a good grasp of the concepts. Confusion on top of confusion just equals more confusion. Take the time to learn it right the first time; it will be well worth your time, because fully understanding stock options is key to consistent profits.

High demand for a stock relative to supply drives the stock price higher, but what causes that high demand in the first place? Ultimately, demand for a stock is driven by how confident investors are about that stock's prospects.
In the short term, things like quarterly earnings reports that beat expectations, analyst upgrades, and other positive business developments can lead investors to be willing to pay a higher price to acquire shares. On the flip side, disappointing earnings reports, analyst downgrades, and negative business developments can cause investors to lose interest, thus reducing demand and forcing sellers to accept lower prices.
