Click on the Settings or Cog icon at the bottom of your Messenger chat box as shown below.
Click on "Turn Off Active Status" option. Doing so will launch the "Active Status" window shown in the image below. In the pop-out window, tick on the circle beside "Turn off active status for only some contacts In the box below that, type in the Facebook name of the friend that you no longer want to chat with.
As you type, Facebook will automatically show you active users in your chat box. Just click on the account you want to turn off chat for.
You could turn this toggle off here and turn it off and now you will no longer appear as active. On Facebook messenger.

Quick tip: You can also access your active status settings by clicking the Messenger icon in the top-right corner, and in the Messenger drop-down, clicking "See all in Messenger" at the bottom. Then, on the full-screen Messenger page, click the three-dot icon in the top-left corner, choose "Preferences," click "Turn off Active Status" in the pop-up, and choose your active status.
